Apocalyptic Skies: Millbrae Awakes to Red Haze

On Wednesday, September 9th, students woke up to an orange-like filter outside their Bay Area homes. These ominous skies have continued to prevail all morning and afternoon, casting a night time feel to this darkened day.

I’ve never seen anything like this before in my life. I went on a jog this morning and no one else was outside.

The smoke in the sky comes from the Bear Fire near Chico, with ash being brought down by wind. Despite barely smelling the smoke outside, residents are still surrounded by the dark sky with a yellow or orange hue. While the air quality is currently moderate (AQI of 77) in Millbrae, continue to keep an eye on the Air Quality Index throughout the day to see if you need to take precautions. The murky haze of smoke and smog is expected to linger.

Air district officials have decided to extend a Spare the Air alert through Wednesday. This lengthening has resulted in this region further extending its record of consecutive Spare the Air days from 16 days in 2018 to 25 days.
