Chappell Roan: Balancing Success and Boundaries

By: Emily Wu, Staff Writer

Chappell Roan is a pop singer who blew up over the summer and is known for her most popular songs, “HOT TO GO!” and “Good Luck, Babe!” She started to gain popularity when she opened for Olivia Rodrigo during the Guts World Tours. Her next big performance that opened her audience to more people was at Coachella, where she performed more than 10 of her songs. September 2023 was when Roan released her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, and gained even more popularity by getting on Billboard 200 in April.

However, like all celebrities, Roan has experienced some uncomfortable interactions with the uprise in her fame.

On August 23, on her Instagram, Chappell Roan expressed her discomfort with her interactions with fans, calling it “predatory behavior” and how she wants to be respected with her boundaries. She shared the ways she has been harassed by people; being touched, getting followed, and overall, acting creepy towards her.

Although there are people who make her feel uncomfortable, there are still lots of fans that are on her side. “… people need to stop harassing somebody, it’s kind of creepy.” commented Alison Lok (9).

On September 27, Chappell Roan announced to her fans that she would be canceling her shows at the All Things Go music festival in New York and Columbia, Maryland. The singer chose to pull out from her scheduled performances due to prioritizing her health and the feeling of being overwhelmed.

Fans have talked about how it wasn’t fair for Chappell Roan to cancel shows so suddenly. Alison Lok (9) mentioned, “Yeah, like, I’m sad for them, I feel bad for them, but I’m not, like, really mad at her for it.”

Some people have also said that Roan might’ve known that she was going to cancel and decided to announce it so late. “I think that, like, she’s human, so she obviously gets, like, stage fright and stuff, but the fact that she canceled a day of, when so many people were going just for her,” Suri Rastani (9) mentioned, “I bet she knew for days before that she wasn’t going to be able to, she should have just not booked the venue.”

Chappell Roan’s overnight fame has been overwhelming for her. As Suri Rasani (9) noted, “She’s so new, she doesn’t really acknowledge the stress,” However, it is also important to know that “…so many different celebrities are so different that, like, she rose to fame too fast. So there’s no way that she could have expected this amount of stress.” This combination of pressure and becoming famous too quickly creates a challenge for Roan.

Although there has been hate and criticism  towards her, Roan has 44.7 million monthly listeners on Spotify, and with such a strong fanbase, it is clear that her career will continue to thrive. “…because there’s already so many people supporting her, me included, there’s gonna be like so many more people supporting her throughout the year. So there’ll be a reason to hate her, but there’s not gonna be enough reason for her to just not have her career.” quoted Suri Rastani (9).
