Around the month of October, many start deciding their Halloween costumes and make plans for the evening of October 31. From princess gowns to terrifying headless costumes the possibilities are endless.
Here at Mills, many of our teachers enjoy the Halloween spirit by dressing up in costumes to celebrate the annual spooky season.. Ms. Leung, an English teacher here at Mills, loves the Halloween spirit. She has a class tradition of her own that has been done for the past 18 years. Students come together, making a food project to reflect off a topic they’ve learned in their class, creating a fun experience for Halloween. This year Ms. Leung will be dressing up as Gregor Samsa from the novel, The Metamorphosis. She explained, “ I live on a street where the houses all decorate, so I did already decorate my house. I like having my house be a friendly house though so there’s nothing scary at our address.”
Ms. Cañas, another beloved English teacher, is also passionate about this October holiday. This year Ms. Cañas will be dressing up as an inflatable t-rex. She jokingly said, “I’m just kinda concerned how I’m going to fit through the door.” When asked about how Halloween costumes have changed over the years, she responded “I think people have become more aware of harmful Halloween costumes and have avoided that [instead going for more] playful, joyous festive costume[s].” As for her favorite aspect of the holiday, Ms. Cañas said, “I think two things, obviously the candy, but I think also this, like whimsical, kind of like magical experience, where you feel like there is magic in the air, and you can dress up, and there’s just something that, I think, no matter what age you are, that makes it really playful and exciting and kind of like ushers in the holiday season.”
Lastly for the teachers, Ms. Zink, who teaches Ethnic Studies, AP human geography, SAIL, and manages the yearbook committee is also prepared for the nearing day. She will be dressing up as moodang’s zookeeper, Ms. Zink mentioned that, “[I] Love watching scary movies. I just watched The Thing and it’s a good movie.”
She also shared, “There are a lot of viral trends I’m thinking about. I’m hoping to see some group costumes [last year] a bunch of people dressed up as, like “Men in Black.”
Next let’s bring it over to the students. Freshman Samantha Ma also happens to be a Halloween and Christmas lover. She and her friends will be dressing up as Alvin and the Chipmunks as well as the Inside Out characters. One thing Samantha loves about Halloween is “Seeing everyone in goofy costumes you wouldn’t normally see people in.” A tradition Samantha has during the holiday is “Trick or treating with friends then trading all the candy we collect with each other.”
Sienna Landucci is also a beloved fan of Halloween. Sienna will be dressing up as Vector from the movie Despicable Me. Her favorite aspects are enjoying the free candy whilst seeing everyone’s costumes. “My tradition every year is to go over to my friend’s house and trick or treat in her neighborhood with our friends,” said Landucci. Something special she does that she shared with us is, “Every year me and my dad will watch the Nightmare Before Christmas either the day before or the day of.”
Halloween comes with such fun festivities and events to look forward to, from spending time with friends and family to the excitement of the day itself. This year looks like it’s going to be an amazing one filled with tons of candy and treats!
