As 2019 approaches, it’s time to say goodbye to our fall sports! This year was eventful for Mills athletes: Varsity Boys Water Polo ends the season undefeated, and Cross Country sent Girls Varsity to state championships. Whereas the season’s end may mark the beginning of loose diets and free time, it also signals the start of offseason conditioning.
In an interview with Michelle Chan, a Mills senior who competes in water polo and swim, she reveals her conditioning routine. Although swim practice does not differ between seasons, the new year signals the beginning of dryland exercises. Consisting of hip bridges and cable-push pulls, these workouts are only a few ways to improve a swimmer’s stamina and flexibility in the water. To add on, Varsity swimmer Justin Chang incorporates strength training and cardio into his workout. For the most effective practice, however, both athletes advise additional hours in the pool; Justin, for example, spends nearly 17 hours in the water and trains eight times per week. Dietwise, carbohydrates and proteins are the main sources of energy. To reach his carbohydrate and calorie goal, Justin will occasionally indulge in two “Pumbo-sized” boba drinks from Tpumps!
To keep fit for Track after their Cross Country season ends, Varsity athletes Tessa Chen and Leo Schroeder must maintain their workout schedule, as well as their diets, during the offseason. Both students shared their different approaches to running competitively. While Tessa prefers to take a 3-5 week break to gradually improve her stride with incremental runs, Leo dives headfirst into a strict regimen, averaging around seven miles everyday. As for dietary restrictions, Tessa personally recommends abstinence from foods with artificial sugars. When asked to provide tips for any aspiring runners, both athletes advised to start offseason conditioning on a slow track. As Leo mentioned, while pushing oneself is a sign of motivation, it’s not worth the risk of injury. Despite the seemingly stagnant signs of progress, success can be achieved with long-term training. On a final note, Tessa signed off with these words of encouragement: “It’s easier to train with a friend. Remember to appreciate the sport; you’re doing it for a reason.”
Although the fall season has passed, it’s clear that the dedication of our self-motivated Vikings athletes remains. The Thunderbolt would like to congratulate our Mills athletes, and we wish them the best of luck to wherever their passions may take them!
