Love in the Bay: A High Schooler’s Guide to Valentine’s Day

By: Noah Ung, Staff-Writer

As Valentine’s Day nears, Mills High School buzzes with excitement—and maybe a little stress. Candy grams fill classrooms, pink and red decorations brighten the halls, and students wonder how the day will unfold. But beyond the chocolates and roses, what really makes Valentine’s Day special? Whether you’re spending it with a partner, friends, or just yourself, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the day.

Love doesn’t have to be expensive. Some of the best dates are simple: take a peaceful stroll through the San Mateo Japanese Garden, challenge each other to mini golf at Malibu Grand Prix, or grab boba from TP Tea and relax at Central Park. If you’re feeling more adventurous, catch the sunset at Half Moon Bay or go thrifting together for a fun and unique experience. A fun outing doesn’t need a big budget—just good company.

But Valentine’s Day isn’t just about romance. Friendship deserves its own celebration! Plan a picnic at Coyote Point with snacks and music, belt out favorite songs at karaoke night, or hit the arcade for some friendly competition. Hosting a movie marathon with classic rom-coms or a game night with friends can also make for a fun and cozy evening. These moments strengthen bonds and create unforgettable memories.

Spending the day solo? Make it about self-love. Treat yourself to a new book, try a fun café, or enjoy a cozy movie night. Writing a letter to your future self or doing a small act of kindness—like surprising a friend with their favorite snack—can make the day feel extra special. Even something as simple as taking a scenic drive or watching the sunset can be a peaceful way to embrace the day.

At its core, Valentine’s Day is about appreciation—for partners, friends, and yourself. Whether through a grand gesture or a small moment of kindness, love is worth celebrating in every form. So, how will you be spreading the love this Valentine’s Day?
