Have you ever wondered how to tie your interests, aspirations, and future careers in one place? A club is a great place to start. The Mills Architecture Club, among the abundance of groups at Mills, does just that. This club fosters an environment that welcomes all students to dive into architectural concepts and a glimpse into the profession.
What inspired the club to bloom was the passion that the president, Sophie Hohmann (12) had for architecture. She said, “In the club, I wanted to give members the chance to witness and experience architecture in a new light and undergo a real-world design project.”
After taking the architecture and design courses at school and gaining more experience through being a teacher’s assistant for the beginner course, Hohmann realized she wanted to share her knowledge. Additionally, she wished to serve as a mentor to others new to the subject and guide them to explore their interests through real-life design and club events.
The space created there allows members to engage in competitions, develop skills in team collaboration and presentation, draw visuals, and explore various programs, including SketchUp, Revit, and AutoCAD to bring their visions to life. With the space granted to them by the club, they have been able to dive deeper into foreign topics such as adaptive reuse and sustainability strategies. If you didn’t know adaptive reuse is the practice of repurposing an old building making it into something new and sustainability strategies are used to make buildings more environmentally friendly.
Adding on, Hohmann said that the club’s purpose is to enhance architectural passion and allow members to “experience /witness the process of ideation to formulation, serving as an eye-opener that will further their interest in the realm of design.
Overall, if you are interested in architecture or want to learn more about the topic, stop by room 216 every Tuesday and Thursday at lunch to join their community. There, you will get the chance to be taught proficient skills while gaining the opportunity to participate in competitions.
