The Mills tennis courts have now reopened after months due to the coronavirus pandemic. Students can now request the tennis courts through the school district website Mondays through Fridays, stretching from 3:30 to 8:30pm. Additionally, students can reserve the stadium tracks at any San Mateo Union High School District (SMUHSD) school through that schools website. Athletic Director, Tim Keller, spoke more about the importance of slowly reopening high school fields and courts.
The reopening of the Mills tennis courts will allow athletes to enhance their tennis skills and get back into shape. Students are required to bring their student ID or class schedule to confirm their status as a SMUHSD student, wear a face covering prior to check in, and will be health screened upon entry. Although the tennis courts will be open, it is still undecided how long the specific time slot is reserved. Mr. Keller backed the idea, stating, “I don’t know, but I bet the time slots are for one hour each.” Realistically, this one hour time limit will allow students enough time to play tennis and get aquadate aerobic exercise. Along with these benefits, it will help these athletes get one step ahead from their competition at other schools who might still be in vacation mode.
The SMUHSD’s decision to reopen the sports facilities was based on the fact that the tennis courts are a safe space for students to be outside, healthy, and active. By taking the proper precautions to admit students into the track and tennis courts, Mr. Keller believes, “It is a good idea to open them up. The school is following the guidelines set out by the District office.” He reassures the idea that “the district is meeting or exceeding all guidelines set out by the San Mateo County Health Office.” While guidelines are being followed by the District, students must continue to stay socially distanced and follow quarantine guidelines while using the facilities.
As Mills Vikings we are responsible for our personal health, safety and athletic spirit. Mr. Keller addressed the importance of re-opening the tennis courts, along with the safety precautions Mills is ensuring. The Mills Thunderbolt hopes to see students active and outside soon!
