The first online Back-to-School Night was held on a live webinar with a presentation by the school administration. To visit classes, parents were invited to create a parent observer account on Canvas and watch the course videos created by teachers to learn about each of their child’s classes.
Mills administration broadcasted the event on Zoom and Youtube Live, providing real time translators in Cantonese, Mandarian, and Spanish. Back-to-School Night kicked off with an introduction to the school by Principal Duszynski, followed by Assistant Principal Jose Gomez to talk about what the teachers and staff have been doing over distance learning. Additionally, PTO President Karen Bettucchi urged parents to join the PTO board to voice their opinions directly to the school. Assistant Principal Lyndsey Schlax also provided information on student activities, such as ASB and Journalism, and other useful announcements to support the student body. One of the new Wellness counselors, Staysha Val, also shared health resources for both students and families, introducing a new monthly district taught workshop for how parents can support their children during this time. Finally, Dean Christian discussed online learning expectations.
A final message from the school advised parents and students to practice the four pillars of health and hygiene so “[students and staff] can return back to campus as soon as it is safe to do so!” The four pillars include washing your hands, practicing social distancing, wearing face masks, and limiting social gatherings. This is the first of many school wide events that are expected to occur online this school year.
