Recently, in 2025 there have been a total of 87 aviation crashes. 62 in January and 25 in february. Though there have been many questions about why and how, the real question is, are airline companies doing enough to ensure safety on planes?
According to ‘USA today’ flying is still very safe despite the amount of accidents we have had this new year. In the 2024 transportation statistics report, air travel is identified as the absolute safest form of transportation. Most common destinations for people in the U.S. like western Europe, southeast Asia, the Middle East and Oceania have pretty strong aviation safety records. In North America, Asia pacific, and Europe regions, the fatality rate for commercial flying was about 0.5 for every million flights. Some people are also concerned about near misses in U.S. airliners however that is used as a sign that the safety system is working. Personally I believe that it is safe to travel by plane even though there have been a couple accidents lately. Airlines in the U.S. are usually very quick to learn from their past mistakes and accidents and take it as a moment to learn.
Now comes the why. Why so many crashes in the sky? Based on “CNN” There actually isn’t a specific reason as to why there have been so many accidents lately. The real truth is that in January there weren’t as many aviation accidents as people believe. In fact last month there was a record low number of airplane accidents nationwide if you combine both private and commercial flights. Most of the crashes in January were private flights and compared to January of 2024, the total number this year was 18 less than the 80 recorded last year. This January stands out to people because of the fact that the big crashes are commercial airliners. Because the majority of crashes are small private planes they don’t get much attention.
It is absolutely devastating to hear about the aviation accidents and the people affected by it. However people should not be worried about their safety flying. The recent plane crashes this year are much less than any other year so nothing has gotten worse and airline companies are constantly looking for new ways to improve their safety.
