Your Guide To Staying Active While Staying Safe

By: Karine Chan, Editor-In-Cheif

Though public gyms have been forcibly closed down for many months due to rising COVID-19 cases, that’s no excuse to become inactive during quarantine. As we’ve all become sitting ducks, it is increasingly easy to fall into unhealthy habits—mentally and physically. But fear no more, as there are many simple and safe ways to stay active during this time.

While wearing a mask and practicing proper social distancing of course, going on bike rides and hikes can serve as an amazing way to stay active. Getting out of the house is a great way to clear your mind and take a refresher from our computers. Taking just thirty minutes out of your day to walk, run, or bike can change your entire mood for the day. And your body will thank you for the cardio!

Another great way to stay active is by going for a swim. If you have a pool, this is a great time to put it to use! In the safety of your home, swimming is a phenomenal way to incorporate physical activity into your schedule.

If I haven’t struck your fancy with the activities mentioned, I raise you this: a virtual dance party. Grab some friends, a digital device, and some good music. We’ve been blessed with technology such as zoom to connect us with friends and loved ones each from the comfort of our own homes—use it to your advantage! Who says you can’t enjoy each other’s company through the screen?

Additionally, with work and school starting up again, you may feel as if there is simply not enough time in the day to get some physical exercise in. But on the contrary, as there are many exercises you can take part in while tied up in virtual meetings. Lifting small, handheld weights is a nearly effortless way to move around your body, and you can easily do it without missing out on your meeting. Walking up and down a flight of stairs is also a substantial way to incorporate some exercise into your day, your computer can serve as a makeshift weight!

It is difficult to stay motivated to be productive and active while living through a pandemic, so do not fret. Being active every day is not a necessity. Some days your motivation levels may be lower, and that is a-okay. Take time to nourish your body and cater to its specific needs every single day. Be kind to your body and mind, it needs to rest to serve you well. I hope you’re all staying safe, happy, and healthy!
