There are a lot of staff members here at Mills highschool but one, in particular, is extraordinary at what he does and truly affects the school widely. This staff member’s name is Michael Duer.

Michaels official job title at Mills is Campus safety specialist. His old job title was student service campus aid.  He started working at mills in 2014 and he helps to ensure a safe and secure environment for the students. Helping people around the area, finding missing objects, finding teachers and professors, answering any questions you have, Michael is the one to ask. He averages 13 miles just by walking around campus everyday as his job.

Before coming to America Michael lived in Munich, Germany where he was born and raised. His father was an American so he was curious and decided to move to the United States when he was 25 years old. Before he came to work at Mills he worked a variety of jobs including  makeup and hairdressing, directing and film, scuba diving instructor, flight instructor, first aid instructor, soccer and tennis coach here at mills, and etc.

If you would have asked him 10 years ago if he ever would’ve come back to high school he would’ve never thought he would have been back in this type of environment.

When he was a high school student he had a bit of a rough start and didn’t really like the high school environment until he met a teacher that opened up to him and made high school a safer and more comfortable environment. Everyday when he comes to work he aims to be a staff member that can help students feel safe and comfortable around the school.

He has had many memorable moments working around campus, from students losing their phones to leading students to their assigned classes. He loved being around children and aims to make students happy when working.

There is much appreciation spread around to the staff and Michael is an important key staff member that dedicates his time to Mills, so if you see him around, give him a thank you or a simple “Hi, how are you”.
