Juniors and Seniors are always looking forward to attending prom. Dressing up, hanging out with friends, listening to music, and just having fun. Word got out that this year’s prom is supposed to be on Treasure Island, or Bay’s famed artificial island. Treasure Island is a must-see for scenic views, serene weather, and famed guinea pigs who populate the neighborhoods. Many students are excited for their picture-perfect prom date and the many photos that await at Treasure Island.

Unfortunately, we have heard some news that there was a possibility of Treasure Island sinking. The following day, admin made a hard but necessary choice. Thanks to Dean Christian, we will still be having prom: in fact, he will be the one hosting it and it will be in his backyard!

There has been a lot of controversy with students being unhappy with this plan and where it’s going to be relocated to, at least there will still be a chance for Seniors to have their last high school dance.

Dean Christian found out that Treasure Island was sinking because he went to check it out over the weekend and measured it with a ruler and saw how close it was sinking. Little known fact, Dean Christian has a masters in marine biology and industrial coastline development, and has been tasked by the government with secret sea level recording duties. He felt like it was his fault which has made him decide to have prom in his backyard because he thought it would be a great opportunity to try and get closer with some students and create a bond with them so that they’re comfortable enough to go to him if they’re ever having a problem during school hours. Although his backyard is only about 800-1,100 square feet-roughly the size of a classroom, he is certain there will be enough space for Juniors and Seniors plus their guests. There may be some complaints about the loud music and how late prom will be going on until but he’s still willing to host it and just have fun with the students. To make prom fun for students, there is going to be a lot of snacks and food, a photo booth, a dj, and he also has a swimming pool which he is letting us use, so bring your swimsuits!

A Senior here at Mills who wishes to stay anonymous has shared that she thinks prom being moved to the dean’s backyard is great because it gives students the opportunity to get closer to Dean Christian. “Maybe there will be enough space for both Juniors and Seniors but if there isn’t some students shouldn’t be able to come. Students with at least a 3.0 gpa or higher should be allowed in to cut the amount of people.” She believes it is unfair for kids with a gpa below a particular level to be permitted to attend prom; if space is limited, they shouldn’t be allowed to attend. She also shared that prior to what she said before, having it in his backyard will help us get closer to him, “Even if it’s not ideal whatever works will be fine and if leadership or dean Christian can find a better place for prom to be hosted at then great!”

Ameena Stringer, a Junior here at Mills high thinks prom should’ve been moved somewhere else. She thinks it isn’t fair since last year’s prom was on a boat. “I highly doubt there would be enough room for every student who wants to go and bring a guest.”

Though some other students could object to this idea and prefer prom to take place at a more expensive and luxury location, as it has in previous years. We are grateful that Dean Christian did not cancel the prom entirely, but is allowing us to still enjoy one.
